Squealing

Signs You Should Get Your Brakes Serviced - Toronto, ON

A high-pitched squealing is a surefire way to know that your brakes need to be replaced, especially if this noise happens whenever you use your brakes.

  • Metal indicators are built into your brakes, creating a high-pitched sound when your brakes are worn down to a certain depth.
  • Make sure you occasionally turn your music down and listen for this sound, since it sometimes isn’t loud enough to be heard over the radio.
  • It’s important to note that this squeal can also occur if your car has been sitting in water for a long period of time.
  • To determine the difference between the squeal occurring because of excess water or because of worn brakes, simply listen to see if it stops after a day. If it doesn’t stop, that means your brakes need to be replaced.

They Look Worn

Visually check your brakes at regular intervals to see if the pads are wearing down. You can look between the spaces in your car’s wheel spokes to see what your brake pads look like.

  • Your outside brake pad will rest against your wheel’s metal rotor.
  • You should have at least a quarter inch of brake pad visible.
  • When your brake pad has less than a quarter of an inch left, you should get your brakes replaced right away.

Pulling Occurs

When you use your brakes, does your vehicle pull in one direction or another? This is a sign that you could have an issue with your brake linings.

  • If your brake linings wear in an uneven pattern, your car will pull to the side rather than remain straight when your brakes are applied.
  • Pulling might also occur when you have foreign matter in your brake fluid.
  • In either case, you should bring your vehicle into our service centre for a checkup.
