1. Decreased Engine Performance
A clogged or failing oil filter restricts the flow of oil to your engine, which can result in sluggish performance. If you notice that your Lincoln is struggling to accelerate or isn’t responding to throttle input as quickly as it used to, then a failing oil filter may be the culprit.
2. Dirty Exhaust Smoke
Thick, dark, or dirty smoke coming from your exhaust could indicate a problem with your oil filter. When the filter is clogged, contaminants may build up in your engine and burn off, producing noticeable smoke from the tailpipe.
3. Unusual Engine Noises
If you hear knocking, ticking, or other unusual noises coming from your Lincoln’s engine, this may be a signal that your oil filter is no longer functioning effectively. Without the proper filtration offered by a new oil filter, engine components may not be adequately lubricated, leading to enhanced friction and increased wear.
4. Oil Pressure Warning Light
The vast majority of late model Lincoln vehicles are equipped with sensors that monitor oil pressure. If your oil pressure warning light comes on, this could mean that your oil filter is restricting the appropriate flow of oil to your engine. If this happens, it’s better to act with an abundance of caution and have one of our Lincoln service technicians inspect your vehicle for you.
5. Dirty Oil
As mentioned above, when your oil filter is functioning properly, it keeps contaminants out of your engine oil. If you notice that your oil is excessively dirty or gritty during a routine check, this may be a sign that your current filter isn’t doing its job properly.
