Spring Road Trip Vehicle Checklist

Now that the weather is finally warming up around Toronto, there’s something about that first stretch of fresh spring air that just hits differently after months of snow. You can almost feel the collective mood shift, with cars getting washed, summer tires going back on, as well as drivers planning their first road trips of the season. But, winter does have a way of being tough on vehicles, doesn’t it? Before the excitement fully takes over, it is worth giving your car a quick but thorough check. Follow along with our service team at Downtown Lincoln as we go over what you should inspect before hitting the road this spring, including: tires, brakes, fluids, battery, lights, and windshield.

5 Signs Your Brake Pads Should Be Replaced

Spring Road Trip Vehicle Checklist

1. Tires

Your tires take the biggest hit over winter, so this is one area you definitely want to check before any spring road trip. Start with tire pressure, since cold weather can reduce PSI quite a bit. A good rule is to check pressure when the car has been parked for at least a few hours. You can find the recommended PSI on the driver-side door placard or in your owner’s manual, not on the tire itself. Even being 3 to 5 PSI low can affect fuel economy or, worse, traction control performance.

2. Brakes

Your braking system is another area absolutely worth checking before a spring road trip. Pay attention to how the brake pedal responds. If it requires more pressure to stop, that can point to air in the brake lines or worn hydraulic components. As well, listen closely when braking at low speeds with the windows down. Squealing often indicates worn brake pads, and anything close to 3 mm or less should be replaced soon. If you are not sure how to measure pad thickness, it is better to have a qualified mechanic take a look. Downtown Lincoln is always here to assist!

3. Fluids

Fluids are also one of the most important things to check before a spring road trip. For example, engine oil. Check both the level and the condition using the dipstick. Pull it out, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully, then check the reading. The oil should sit between the minimum and maximum marks. From a technical standpoint, oil that looks very dark, gritty, or has a burnt smell may be past its useful life, even if the level is fine. Other fluids, such as coolant, should also be checked. If you are not completely sure how to read the dipstick or judge the condition of any fluid, it is better to contact one of our technicians at Downtown Lincoln to check it for you.

4. Battery Health

After a cold Canadian winter, your battery is one of the most common weak points heading into spring. Low temperatures slow down chemical reactions inside the battery, which can reduce its overall capacity and make it harder for your vehicle to start consistently. Check the battery terminals for corrosion, which often appears as a white or bluish buildup around the posts. This can interfere with electrical flow and cause inconsistent power delivery. Also, a healthy 12-volt battery should typically read around 12.6 volts when the engine is off and about 13.7 to 14.7 volts when the alternator is charging. If you have a multimeter, these readings can give you an idea of battery system health. Anything significantly lower may indicate a weak battery.

5. Lights

Another task on your list is to make sure all your lights are working in order. Do we need to explain why lights are important for driving? Probably not. Start by checking all exterior lights one by one, including headlights, daytime running lights, turn signals, brake lights, as well as reverse lights. If you do not have someone to help, a simple way to do this is to park near a wall or garage door and test each setting while observing the reflection. If any bulbs are flickering, dim, or not working at all, it is best to replace them before your trip. In some cases, diagnosis or replacement can require a bit of expertise, so it is often easier to leave it to the professionals at Downtown Lincoln.
