Summer Maintenance Checklist with Downtown Lincoln

Summer road trips are fun, but can also be demanding on your Lincoln. If you’re considering a long trip, you should first make sure your vehicle is ready for it by giving it some maintenance. The last thing you want is for your journey to end with you stuck on the side of the highway with a broken-down vehicle. The service team here at Downtown Lincoln has put together a quick list of things you should double-check in your vehicle before you get set for your summer adventures. You might also want to know the common signs your oil filter needs replaced, or some tips on safe winter driving

  • Fluid Levels

This is something you should do in the springtime anyway, but make sure your oil has been changed prior to hitting the road this summer. In addition to the oil, you should also have your Lincoln’s other essential fluids topped up and examined as well. This includes brake fluid, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, coolant, and even washer fluid. A vehicle with clean and full fluid levels is likely to avoid a number of engine and driving problems on the road.

  • Tire Quality

When you have your winter tires switched off, have the service team take a look at the quality of your all-season or summer tires. Make sure there are no obvious signs of serious wear or damage, and that they’re also topped up to the recommended PSI. Don’t forget your spare tire or donut, either! If you need it, you’ll want it to be ready to use in an emergency.

  • Brake Integrity

You should also have your brakes checked out before the summer. Brake pads often need to be replaced every 50,000 km. Also watch for any concerning issues when you go to use the brakes, such a spongy feeling brake pedal, or loud metallic noises. The last thing you want is for your brakes to give out while travelling at highway speeds.

  • Electrical System

Most service centres will check your battery for free, and you should have it looked at if it’s over three years old. If it is no longer holding a charge, it’s probably time to get it replaced. Also, keep an eye out for obvious damage to the battery, such as leaking, swelling, or corrosion.

  • Lighting

Take a minute to look at your vehicle’s lights, both inside and out, to make sure everything is working correctly. In particular, ensure your headlights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights and hazard lights are all functional. Keep in mind, there are a number of Canadian jurisdictions where it’s illegal to drive with burned-out headlights.

  • A/C Vents

If you intend to do a lot of summer driving, don’t neglect your vehicle’s A/C system. Not only should you ensure the fans are working correctly, but you should also make sure the vents have been given a cleaning to flush out dust and other allergens.

  • Clean Up

Washing the winter grime and muck off the exterior of your Lincoln doesn’t just make it look good, it helps preserve the integrity of the body. You should also clean out the interior before your summer driving. Not only does this make the cabin more comfortable, but it also improves the air quality by reducing the dust, dirt, and other particulate matter the A/C may blow around inside.
